Yamaha was founded in 1887 as Yamaha Corporation, initially dedicated to manufacturing musical instruments. In 1954, after World War II, the company developed its first motorcycle, named the YA-1, also known by the nickname “Aka-tombo” or Red Dragonfly, in reference to this insect, which is quite common in Japan and historically considered a symbol of victory by the Samurais.
The YA-1 featured a 125cc 2-stroke engine, and its design was inspired by the German DKW RT 125 motorcycle. It was so successful that in 1955, Yamaha Motor Company was established as a subsidiary of Yamaha Corporation.
Yamaha began manufacturing motorcycles in Spain in 1982 under the company SEMSA (Sociedad Española de Motocicletas, S.A.), the former Sanglas motorcycle company partially owned by Yamaha. This was when the first models, such as the S400 Yamaha (Sanglas-Yamaha), DT80, SR250, RD125, and RD350, began production. The RD350, famously nicknamed the “black widow” or “mata pijos,” delivered 60 HP from a 350cc 2-stroke engine, making it a true beast of its time that required skill to ride at full throttle.
In 1987, Yamaha took full control of SEMSA, giving rise to Yamaha Motor España, which produced a wide range of motorcycle models such as the XT 350, SR 125, TZR 80, and TZR 125; scooters like the Majesty and X-Max in various engine sizes; and mopeds like the Jog and Neo, all of which were major sales successes.
In recent years, they also produced models such as the XT 660 and MT-03, following the closure of the Italian subsidiary. Yamaha Motor España continued manufacturing motorcycles in Spain until 2012, when its Palau de Plegamans (Barcelona) plant was permanently closed.

Today, Yamaha offers a wide and extensive range of both motorcycles and scooters.
In the sports segment, there are the R1, R7, R6, and R125. In the Naked category, we find the MT-10, MT-09, MT-07, MT-03, and MT-125. The timeless yet sporty XSR models include the XSR900, XSR700, and XSR125. For Sport Touring, there are the NIKEN, TRACER 9, and TRACER 7. Adventure models include the Ténéré 700, and off-road competition bikes include the legendary YZ series.
In the scooter segment, there are the 560cc TMAX, the XMAX and Tricity in 300cc and 125cc, as well as the NAMX, D’elight, and the electric NEO’s.
